10 Ways to Look Fresh (When You Don't Really Feel It)

Honestly, who doesn't have late nights and early mornings? Sometimes you need to look MUCH better than you feel. Here's how.

We've all had those mornings: you hop out of the shower to begin your get-ready routine, and when you look in the mirror you see that, despite that compulsory cup of coffee & invigorating shower, you still look like death warmed-over. You are tired, and it shows all over your face. Maybe you were up late working; maybe you were binge-watching your latest Netflix show; maybe you actually went to bed at a reasonable time, but didn't get the best night of sleep. No matter what the reason, some mornings you just have to look fresh, even if you don't feel it.

So what do you do?

(p.s. I've also included 6 ways to hide tired eyes at the bottom of this post. Don't miss it!)

When you wake up...

Exfoliate! Use your favorite scrub to slough away all of that dull skin that's just dragging you down & reveal a healthy glow. One of my favorites is St. Ive's Apricot Scrub — I don't use it very often, or else I'd be scrubbing all the skin off my face, but it's invigorating when used every once in a while!

Pop on a sheet maskthat will make your skin feel refreshed. Try Sephora Collection Ginseng Toning & Brightening mask. I love sheet masks because they're easy to put on, and there's no rinsing!

Give yourself a facial massage with your moisturizer! This part will be fun, and it will feel good. Using your fingertips, massage your chin, your cheeks, your nose, your forehead, and around your eyes in small, circular motions. This will help get the blood flowing and make you look fresh!

While you're doing your makeup...

Skip the lower liner. It will only pull your eyes down and call attention to circles & puffiness.

Don't skip your brows. Doing your eyebrows will instantly pull your face together; even if you don't fill in your brows, at the very least, brush them up and over into place. This will lift your eyes.

Curl your lashes. Curling your lashes will make your eyes look brighter and more awake! Alternately, and maybe even more effectively: grab yourself a pair of falsies and fake it.

Pop on a bit of highlight.Follow my tips for strobing to give yourself a healthy glow. You can't really think "glow" without thinking "fresh," right?

Pick a bright lip color. This will call attention to your mouth and away from your eyes.

When it comes to getting that mane in shape...

Don't underestimate the power of a braid.Truth: 90% of the compliments I get on my hair are on days when I've put some sort of braid in it. And you know what else those days are? Days when I definitely didn't wash it, and I felt too lazy to curl it or flatiron it. Braids are a secret weapon to make your hair look more done with less effort. (Stuck for ideas? Check out my Pinterest board on Beautiful Braids.)

Avoid a plain ponytail or messy bun. Nothing screams "lazy" like these two things, but they are easily fixable with an accessory. Try a headband, or a colorful bobby pin to pull your bangs back. I also find that messy hair looks more intentional if you wear impeccable makeup & a killer pair of earrings.

Employ these tips next time your wake up feeling like you could sleep for four more hours, and nobody will guess that you spent the previous night pounding the last season of Gossip Girl (or was that just me?).
